VIVAnews - U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Trade Promotion Suresh Kumar expressed his excitement on the great progress of Indonesia's economy and more American firm coming to this country. Not surprisingly Indonesia has been viewed as a priority market by US exporters given its strong record of economic growth and the size of its economy.
Mr. Kumar said that at the opening of one of Indonesia’s largest trade exhibitions, the Electric, Power and Renewable Energy Show (EPRE) today at the Jakarta International Expo. “I have been impressed with the opportunities that I am seeing while visiting the EPRE show,” said Mr. Kumar.
He then recalled about his experience as an executive working in Indonesia. "Having lived in Indonesia 20 years ago, I’m pleased to see the great progress of the country and more American firms coming to Indonesia, based on its decade of strong economic growth, ranking its economy the 17th largest in the world and the largest in Southeast Asia. ”
According to U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, he once lived in Indonesia between 1989 and 1993. At that time Mr. Kumar was an executive working for PT Sepatu Bata and later Levi Strauss.
He is visiting Indonesia to attend the EPRE show as part of a five nation tour in East Asia where he re-affirmed America’s commitment to maintaining strong commercial ties with its Asian trading partners. Assistant Secretary Kumar’s mission is to increase trade between the United States and Indonesia falls under the U.S. –Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership’s commitment to build stronger commercial ties.
“I have been discussing the Indonesian market for industrial products and equipment supplying the electric power, oil and gas and mining sectors with several American exhibitors, and I’m learning this is a growth market for many of them," Mr. Kumar said.
A leader of President Obama’s National Export Initiative, Mr. Kumar has been visiting Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Taiwan in support of American businesses exporting to Asian markets and to explore new opportunities for American SME exporters. Because of its strong record of economic growth and the size of its economy, Indonesia is viewed as a priority market by US exporters under the National Export Initiative.
According to the Embassy, Indonesia was one of the fastest growing markets in the world for U.S. exports in 2010 reaching a total of $6.9 billion in goods, up 35.3 percent from 2009. Leading categories of export goods from the US were food and agricultural products, transportation and telecommunications equipment, and industrial chemicals. Indonesia is currently the 32nd largest export market for U.S. goods.
