VIVAnews - Indonesian Vice President Boediono observes the mudflow dike in Sidoarjo, East Java. Boediono calls on the Sidoarjo Mud Mitigation Agency (BPLS) to elevate the embankment structure in order to prevent the mud from overflowing.
The elevation, said Boediono, is made in anticipation of high precipitation in the area due to the coming of the rainy season.
Boediono acknowledged he continued monitoring the mudflow progress through BPLS reports, Public Works Ministry and the news in the media.
For the time being, 12 meters high of dike has been built. Head of BPLS Sunarso acknowledged, the surface of the dried mud keep rising and moving north.
"The surface of the mud continues to mound near the edge of the dike near Porong-Tanggulangi Highway and railway tracks that often experience landslides," said Sunarso.
To help reduce the volume, BPLS operates three dredgers through which mud is channeled into Porong river. Earlier, Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto suggested that a waterway is built on the dike. It is also functioned to reduce the mud volume by funneling it to the river.
Last Tuesday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono summoned East Java Governor Soekarwo as regards the settlement of compensation for Lapindo mud victims in three areas. The areas include Besuki, Pejarakan and Kedung Cangkring. According to Soekarwo, his party offered the central government a solution to the completion of the payment.
Responding to this matter, PT Minarak Lapindo Jaya Vice President Andi Darussalam Tabussala said the three villages referred to are detached from the mud-affected map. The compensation for the three villages is the government's responsibility.
