VIVAnews - Investors now no longer weigh Europe, the United States, and Japan as the strongest economies in the world. They looked at developing countries instead, like China, India, and Indonesia as new economic powers.
This was conveyed by economist Faisal Basri during the 2012 economic outlook of Indonesian Financial Services Association (APPI), in Jakarta, on Tuesday.
Faisal said the recession and double depression, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, are already seen on the horizon. If this is not reckoned, Indonesia could be affected. "The improving inflation is the main asset to maintain the economy," he said.
Indonesia’s other asset is the exchange rate that is still sound compared to previous years. The rupiah’s rate against the US dollar, according to Faisal, is still far better than in 2008. In the crisis of 2008, rupiah surpassed the level of Rp12,000 against US Dollar, while currently it is still under Rp9,300 and even rose to Rp8,500.
It is not to mention the flow of foreign funds or hot money. Although today the amount of hot money is huge, Faisal said, it is currently not as much as it was in 2008. "Now the ratio of hot money and direct investment is 1:4, so if hot money is lost, the foreign exchange reserves will not drop," he said.
Unfortunately, the current government has no social safety net as it did in 2008. Yet amid the risks of the global crisis today, the government needs to provide a social safety net. "So far the House is still halfhearted in discussing the social security system," he said.
Another factor in favor of Indonesia amid this global economic downturn is that the main export destination, China, is not experiencing the economic slowdown. So the exports are still ongoing.
