VIVAnews - The government said batik export value reached US$60 million or equivalent to about Rp536 billion. The main destination country is the United States.

"These include batik cloth and its derivative products," said Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, when met after the 2011 World Batik Summit show today in JCC Jakarta.

The U.S, she went on, became the country's biggest export destination, holding about 30 to 40 percent. While the next share goes to Europe. Indonesia exported to meet the demands of batik fabric, fashion, and interior material.

Unfortunately, Europe and the U.S. are now experiencing economic downturn, resulting in a decline of exports. "Therefore, diversification of exports needs to be done, such as to Africa and Asia," she said. "It's important for the development of products to be adjusted to market demands."

Earlier, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the export value of Indonesian batik cloth in 2010 rose 56 percent from that in 2006. In 2006, the exports of batik only amounted to US$14.3 million and then rose to US$22.3 million in 2010.

Yudhoyono viewed the increase can enliven the domestic real sector. It is expected that the accelerated real sector can absorb a large labor force so that unemployment can be reduced.

"Then the poverty rate can be minimized. The welfare of the people will also increase," he said at the opening of World Batik Summit.
