VIVAnews - Head of Central Volcanology Investigation and Technology Development (BPPTK) Subandriyo said the cold lava flow from Mt Merapi in 2010 carried only about 30 percent of the volcanic materials in the rivers upstream.

There are still around 70 percent of Merapi’s materials which at times can endanger the Yogyakarta settlers.

The risk, according to Subandriyo, must be noticed if rain falls with high intensity in the long period of time. This is because high precipitation can cause the recurrence of lava flow. "There are about 90 million cubic yards of Merapi materials," said Subandriyo in Yogyakarta, Tuesday.

Merapi materials, he explained, were contained on the southern and western slopes. On the southern slopes, Merapi material piles most in Gendol River, Kuning river groove, Opak, and Boyong rivers. "A lot of materials are at Gendol River. However, greatest cold lava flow would not still be likely from there," said Subandriyo.

"The lava flow would be immense if there is room for Merapi materials, and there is room for at least 30 percent of water that can wash the Merapi materials to the lower area," he added.

Furthermore, Subandriyo stated, the potential of cold lava flow in fact lies on either side of Gendol River, despite the middle of the stream. The reason for this, he said, is that the main stream of Gendol River has already been covered by the Merapi materials accumulated through the previous cold lava flow. So, later on a new course will be formed.

The Kuning river, Boyong river, Opak, and Putih rivers, according to Subandriyo, have not been entirely clogged by Merapi materials, which could potentially cause cold lava flow.

BBPTK had made maps of areas prone to cold lava flow disaster during the rainy season. The maps of vulnerable areas, Subandriyo explained, were submitted to the Government of Sleman Regency as an early anticipation of the cold lava flow risk.
