VIVAnews - A joint team of the Immigration Office and West Java police apprehended 44 illegal immigrants from Iraq and Iran who were about to cross the sea to Australia from Pelabuhan Ratu beach, Sukabumi regency, West Java.

Acting Head of the Class II Sukabumi Immigration Office, I Ketut Arief, told VIVAnews, "From the results of the initial examination, these immigrants probably have political problems in their home countries. They aim to obtain political asylum from the Australian government. "

Furthermore, Ketut said, the illegal immigrants were in fact still each other’s relatives. Thus, he explained, when the head of the family is politically threatened, he and his extended family automatically fled seeking asylum together for the sake of common security.

The 44 immigrants who were caught were men, women, teens, children, also toddlers. "When confronted, there had been a fight. Sixteen people escaped. The police then fired a warning shot, and managed to stop 11 people among those who fled," said Ketut.

Meanwhile the remaining five immigrants, said Ketut, were eventually arrested in Citamiang and Balandongan areas, Sukabumi, this morning, after the team’s search. Now, all the illegal immigrants are quarantined in the hall of the Immigration Office Class II Sukabumi.

"We are coordinating with the central office to process and follow up on these immigrants. We do not yet know whether they will be brought to the immigration shelter in Cipanas, Kalideres, or Pekanbaru. As regards the matter of the political problems faced by the immigrants, that’s the government’s affairs with the immigrants’ country of origin," said Ketut.
