VIVAnews - The company that manufactures Barbie doll, an icon of beauty and perfection of female body, chooses to pull out from the on-going conflict in terms of environmental issue.

Environmental NGO, Greenpeace claimed its campaign has been succeeded after the toy company Mattel made a commitment to no longer use paper packaging materials from 'the controversial sources’. Mattel decided to use eco-friendly packaging materials.

The California-based company said it would use 70 percent of the Barbie recyclable box packing materials by the end of this year.

The use of eco-friendly materials will increase up to 85 percent by the end of 2015. "We are determined to continue to pursue the use of sustainable paper and wood, and we'll start from the packing box," said Mattel Vice President Lisa Marie Bongiovanni, in a statement, as published by BBC.

Greenpeace welcomed this move and said it took three months for them to persuade Mattel to no longer buy the paper from Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) company, which according to them, had been destroying Indonesia's forests.

"They don’t wrap the dolls and toys by destroy the forest anymore. This is a great victory," said Rolf Skar, a spokesman for Greenpeace. He added that the move would help protect the Sumatran tiger habitat in Indonesia.

Earlier, on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, Greenpeace environmental activists held a protest against the headquarters of Mattel, Barbie’s manufacturer, in El Segundo on the outskirts of Los Angeles.

Wearing the costumes of Ken – Barbie’s lover - the activists unfurled pink banners. Its say represented Ken’s position: "I would not date a girl who is involved in the destruction of forests."

Not only that, a protester driving a pink bulldozer disguised as Barbie took the statement to Mattel.

When VIVAnews asked about the response to this, Sinar Mas Forestry Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations Sapto Sakti said there has not been any official statement from his company yet.

However, as published in Adelaide Now, the APP party said, it supported the policies of Mattel. However, APP urged the compliance that is not limited to a single standard, in this case FSC (Forest Stewardship Council). This is because the FSC discriminate products from Indonesia and developing countries.

"APP supports the policies to protect the environment and the survival of thousands of people in Indonesia," he said.
