VIVAnews – The Bandung Corruption Court since its establishment until today has acquitted three defendants of corruption cases. This figure is less than that recorded at Surabaya Corruption Court.
"From the Surabaya Corruption Court nine cases have been acquitted," Supreme Court justice for special crimes Djoko Sarwoko told VIVAnews today. However, Djoko was reluctant to mention the nine cases.
Djoko did not want to comment if there are weaknesses in the recruitment of special court justice certified in regions. According to him, the Supreme Court has been recruiting judges in accordance with the applicable rules. "Generally, they were lawyers by profession," he said.
Regarding the acquittal rulings, Djoko said, those who feel aggrieved can file an appeal. "Later we will see if there are errors in the verdict at the first level of court," he said.
Yesterday, Bandung Corruption Court acquitted Bekasi Mayor Mochtar Muhammad despite demand made the prosecutors to have him sentenced 12 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rp300 million. The amount is a cumulative sentence of four cases which were leveled against the defendant.
Four corruption cases for which the defendant was indicted are 2010 Adipura Award bribery, the abuse of Bekasi Regional Budget, bribes to the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) and the manipulation of food and beverage budget resulted in losses amounting to Rp5.5 billion.
Upon the acquittal, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) plans to file an appeal. KPK spokesman Johan Budi SP said all the KPK’s evidence submitted to the court is strong enough. "We believe, every case brought to trial is back by adequate evidence. That is why the KPK is often considered slow," said Johan, Tuesday.
