VIVAnews - Bali island is apparently an earthquake-prone area. The construction of earthquake-resistant houses in the island is now required.
National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded the material losses from the earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale on Thursday. Eight houses, seven local government offices, one hospital, two temples and 12 school buildings are damaged.
An institution focusing on the sector of sustainable development in Bali, IDEP Foundation, said the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings is an absolute necessity. "Such building will not collapse if a big earthquake occurs," said Deputy Director of IDEP, Ade Andreawan, in conversation with VIVAnews, on Friday.
According to Ade, the construction of earthquake-resistant buildings is already contained in the manual of housing standards. "Earthquake-resistant house really is not that much different from the any common house available today," he said.
Ade went on earthquake-resistant building must be connected as a whole in perfect balance, uniting foundation columns, beams and roofs.
Yesterday, at 10.16 pm, Bali was rocked by an earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. The quake’s epicenter was at 143 km South West of Nusa Dua Bali, at a depth of 10 km.
