VIVAnews – Settlers in the vicinity of PT Freeport Indonesia, namely in Tembagapura area, Kuala Kencana Timika, and Wanti Papua, call for protection to the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) following current riots in the area.

"We're asking the Commission to voice our concerns. We ask the Commission to help us accelerate the process of resolving this issue," said Solihin, spokesman for the settlers living near Freeport, at the Office of the Komnas HAM, Jakarta, today.

The Papuans living in the Freeport area claimed that they feel their rights to live and to gain security are at risk after the protest on October 10, 2011 ended in chaos. People’s anxiety heightened because of recent shooting cases, murder, and other terrors.

"Within a week, there were shooting incidents which claimed the lives of one contractor and two others. Of course this has a negative impact on us," said Solihin. "Not to mention the blocking of the road that connects the lower and higher plains. We feel there is no security anymore. We live in anxiety," he added.

Solihin said, the settlers around Freeport had prolonged trauma. The terror in Freeport, he said, did not just cause casualties, but also psychological effects. All that, he said, has led to the degradation of the quality of the settlers' life.

"Logistics, food and medicine supplies are hampered," said Solihin.
