VIVAnews - Indonesia struggles to support Komodo Island in the New7Wonders of Nature. However, as voters are sending more and more SMS to the committee, news has it that Borobudur Temple is likely to be removed from UNESCO's list of world heritage.
The main reason behind the plan of dropping Borobudur is that trashes are seen scattered around the site. In addition, volcanic ashes from the previous Merapi eruptions have yet to be completely cleaned out due to minimum budget.
The administrator of Borobudur Temple denied the rumor, saying that UNESCO and Borobudur Temple Conservation Agency have teamed up to preserve the temple following the massive volcanic eruptions.
"It's a fake news. UNESCO is not going to delist Borobudur Temple as world heritage," said Purnomo, President Director of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko.
Purnomo said local inhabitants are taught to produce goods by using volcanic ashes.
"Cleaning the volcanic ashes is not an easy task. We need to have special skills and tools. The cleansing process is also expensive," he said.
Purnomo went on to say that the temple is subject to routine maintenance. Nonetheless, they do not have enough budget to conserve Borobudur in the aftermath of Merapi eruptions due to flat ticket income.
