VIVAnews - Justice and Human Rights Ministry will officiate 12 new correctional facilities in 2012. Around seven other prisons are still under development. The total funds that the House of Representatives (DPR) approved reach more than Rp700 billion.
"There will be around 12 new prisons in Bekasi, Pekanbaru, Pamekasan, Banjar and a facility for children in Bandung, West Java," said Sihabuddin, Director General of Corrections at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, today, October 26.
Sihabuddin said the major problem of correctional facilities in the country is overcapacity. For the time being, the number of prisoners in Indonesia hit 140 thousand while the facilities only employ 30 thousand workers.
"We used to serve 1,000 prisoners. Now we have to take care 3,000 inmates. There must be downgrading in services," he said.
In the Indonesian capital, the capacity of its prisons has exceeded 118 percent.
"Jakarta can only hold 5,000 prisoners. Yet, today, their numbers almost touch 12,000," he said.
