VIVAnews - Chief of National Police Gen. Timur Pradopo said PT Freeport Indonesia gave money to police personnel in Papua, which he considers as normal and can be held accountable.
"If a party pays police officers who have been deployed to secure its area, then it must be part of their fee. But it can surely be held accountable," said General Timur.
However, he said security operation in Papua is part of police duty of which costs have been allocated by the government.
Yesterday, member of the House of Representatives Commission I on Defense Affairs, Lily Wahid, said PT Freeport Indonesia has disbursed US$14 million of funds to National Police and Indonesian Military.
"There is an official remark from Freeport saying that they have paid US$14 million to police and Indonesian military to safeguard Freeport," she said.
Freeport Indonesia spokesperson, Ramdani Sirait, said that the payment issue is a common matter.
"Freeport website has announced about the payment issue. It's not uncommon," said Ramdani.
