VIVAnews - Tens of millions of cubic meters of volcanic material are in await of being washed away by rains on the peak of Mount Merapi following the current eruptions last year during the coming rainy season, threatening the locals inhabiting its slopes with cold lava flood.
"Magelang has just escalated its status to Siaga 1 (red alert)," Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, Chief of National Disaster Management Agency's Information and Public Relations Center, today.
Sutopo said residents living on the lower grounds near 15 rivers around Mount Merapi are in danger of being affected by the volcanic materials. "Of 140 million cubic meters of erupted materials, 90 million cubic meters of them have not yet eroded through rivers," he said.
Sutopo said around 50 percent of materials on the southern slope can stream down through Woro, Gendol, Opak, and Boyong rivers. 50 percent other will flow through Krasak, Putih, Lamat, and Pabelan rivers.
Last rainy season affected 28 villages, destroying 861 homes. Scores of bridges were devastated.
