“The total average growth of sharia banking assets is 40% within the last five years.  Other countries only book 10-15 percent,” said Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia, Halim Alamsyah, today.

Halim explained that Indonesia’s sharia banking is currently ranked fourth behind Iran, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia, a better achievement compared to Bahrain and United Arab Emirates.

Halim said that Indonesia’s sharia banking marks the most significant growth worldwide.  However, Turkey chalks up better growth in the industry.

BI found that Indonesia applies better sharia management principles compared to other countries, one of which is improved application of fatwa that the National Shaira Council issued.

Other than that, the nation’s sharia bank industry is supported by well-planned and tightly monitored human resources.  “That way, the sharia banks are in good hands”, he explained.

The Moslem bank’s development is growing fast after it receives more interest from foreign investors along with the nation’s promising economic growth.

“Foreign Interests is still high this year. We even received visits from two major dignitaries from Kuwait and Dubai, few months ago.  They came directly to Indonesia and they also have great interest [in the business],” he said.
