VIVAnews - Thousands of people in 19 villages in Homeo District, Intan Jaya, Papua, are suffering from starvation .
Member of Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) of Intan Jaya Regency, Thomas Sondegou, said famine has haunted the area for nearly four months.
"Bad weather, huge rainfalls, and strong winds rot food plants and cause harvest failure," said Thomas, today.
Given the condition, the locals can only eat forest tubers, of which local names are mbaga, hippere and wa, to survive. Local governments have yet to distribute aid for the hungry.
"We can only maintain contacts with them through SSB and satellite phones. We can only reach the area by airplane as well," he said.
Intan Jaya is a new regency under administrative reform, which is adjacent to the mining area of PT Freeport Indonesia.
However, official report of the starvation problem is not yet announced by the local administration.
