VIVAnews – The government said rice is available in the National Logistics Agency (Bulog) until end of 2011. The national rice supply by the end of the year will reach 1.8 million tons.
Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Hatta Rajasa, stated that the rice availability has taken into account rice import policy until February 2012 which in total will reach 1.9 million tons. “By the end of the year, we will have a supply of 1.8 million tons, higher than the minimum limit of 1.8 million tons,” Hatta stated in Jakarta.
Although declared safe, he continued, the government is still open for imports. Hatta stated that the maximum total amount of rice which will be imported this year will hit 1.9 million tons, which is in line with the government’s earlier projection of 1.5-1.9 million tons until February 2012.
The amount has included additional imported rice from Thailand of 300 thousand tons, which was previously canceled by the government of Thailand. “This is to maintain good relationship with Thailand,” he said.
Minister of Agriculture, Suswono, said despite this year's production decrease in the Prediction Number (ARAM) III, he said other options are possible, one of which is timely distribution of seeds.
“Other than that, with regard to seeds supply, we have prepared variety seeds for peat area, dry area, and pest-immune seeds,” he said.
The government is trying out other ways to improve the quality of human resources such as by opening agricultural land management field school, unified pest management, and climate management.
