VIVAnews – Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated that around 60 percent of Civil Servants (PNS) were believed to have committed corruption using official travel as their ground.

According to KPK’s counselor, Abdulla Hehamahua, the civil servants were indicated to have been into corruption due to the amount of salary that does not meet their daily necessities.

“The salary is only enough for 10 days,” Hehamahua said in Jakarta on Tuesday, Dec 6.

KPK said more civil servants enjoy official trips more often than working on regular jobs.  In fact, a number of civil servants submitted reports 360-day official travel.

“That is an opportunity to get more income,” he said.

The general public, he said, often think that the bureaucratic reform done by the government to reduce corruption is only concerned on salary. However, KPK assumed that salary is not the only reason for civil servants to be drawn in to corruption.

“We offer the Ministry of Finance huge salary in which allowances are not more than one third of the take-home pay,” he said.

Earlier, Deputy Head of Monetary Transaction Report and Analysis Center (PPATK), Agus Santoso said that he was dismayed on the fact that several new civil servants are indicated of being involved in billions of rupiah worth of manipulation.

“There were two young men from Grade III B whose ages are betwen 28-38 years old and they were doing made-up projects and stole billions of rupiah,” Agus said.

At the start, Agus thought that the two civil servants were “working” for their superiors.  “It turned out that they didn’t. They were doing it for themselves.”
