VIVAnews – A man was caught committing self-immolation during a demonstration in front of Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, Wednesday, Dec 7.   Deputy Chairman of the House of Representative (DPR) from Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) faction, Pramono Anung said that the reason for this action must be sorted out.

“When viewing some issues, such as people’s desperation, including self-immolation, murder, Raafi case, etc, I think that this should make all of us think that the nation’s development system has certain social impacts,” said Pramono today, Dec 8.

According to him, someone who has the courage to burn himself down in front of the Palace must have a certain purpose and intention in efforts to draw the attention of the public.

“I think that the person who did self-immolation in front of the palace wanted to get the attention from the people.  When I see this case, I believe there is a message he wanted to share,” Pram said.

“I have no idea about the message yet,” he said.

“But if the message is political, this has to be responded by the government, especially because it was done in front of the palace. Well, the government must respond to the real message of this action.”

The government, according to Pram, must understand the message the people want to convey. Extreme ways shown in demonstrations must be prevented so that they will not become new trends.

“Do not let this become a new trend and followed by other people,” Pram said.

The man who committed the suicidal act was estimated to be around 40 years old.  His identity remains in the vague.  The motive behind the self-immolation is also unclear. His body suffered from 90 percent of burn injury and must receive intensive treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Central Jakarta.

In response to the case, Presidential spokesman, Julian Aldrin Pasha said that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is aware of the self-immolation case.
