VIVAnews – Indonesia has yet to balance the growth in IT ecosystem with the proper regulating laws. Hence, the government as the policy maker will take action.
“The government is ready to accommodate the trends taking place in IT industry by revising the regulations,” said Aswin Sasongko, a high-ranking official at the Information and Communications Ministry during TechLife Innovative Award 2011 yesterday, Dec 8.
Today, Aswin said that there are 200 million cell phone users in Indonesia.
“Looking at this fact, there are two issues that must be dealt with such as the market size and the opportunity being presented,” he said.
Regarding the examples above, Aswin said that convergence is on in the telecommunication world.
“Cell phones now can broadcast TV shows,” he said.
“Back then, there were many providers of TV broadcasting. In the future, this will become one. Radio, television, and internet broadcasting will use 1 IP-based channel,” said Aswin.
“Therefore, the government must be ready to alter the regulations, for example, so that Telkom can also become an operator for television broadcast,” he said.
Aswin said that the government will amend the current regulations to cover tech convergence.
He furthermore stated that the government will supports any attempt aming at improving Indonesia's tech ecosystem.
“We are fully in support of the people setting up tech incubators as well as awards in various fields that are important for the development of local contents,” Aswin said.
