VIVAnews – Indonesia calls for Research In Motion as BlackBerry manufacturer to qualify four requirements to continue its service in the country.

The requirements are to build after-sales service centers, to facilitate tapping according to the Indonesian law, to block porn contents, and to set up Regional Network Aggregator.

However RIM has only fulfilled 3 requirements so far.  It is yet to build a Network Aggregator in Indonesia.  As a substitute, RIM built a router in Singapore instead of Indonesia.

Indonesia’s Telecommunication Regulation Agency (BRTI) recommended the government through Information and Communications Ministry to stop BlackBerry’s internet service if it fails to qualify the requirement to build a network aggregator in Indonesia.

“It’s up to RIM now.  If the company loves the Indonesian market, then it should be able to build a server here,” said member of BRTI, Heru, on December 14.

He said that it would be a different case if RIM only sells its cellular phones here. The company would have received the same treatment as other vendors like Nokia and Samsung do.  However, since BlackBerry also sells their internet service, then it would have to comply with the telecommunication service regulations as governed by Ministerial Decree No. 21/2001.

Heru also explained that BRTI does not have the intention to detriment the society.  In fact, BRTI tries to push RIM to provide their best service.

“If the server is built here, then the cost would be cheaper, with faster connection. Technically speaking, it’s possible,” he said.

Heru said that RIM does not seem to pay attention to BRTI’s warnings.

“They ignore this because they think our nation has been addicted to their service.”
