VIVAnews – To prevent congested traffic due to the operation of busway in Corridor XI, Jakarta’s Transportation Bureau will sterilize Transjakarta bus lines. One of the attempts is to eradicate illegal parking and on-street parking.
This would certainly affect the parking attendants’ income, which could reach Rp50 thousand per day.
Sutarman, 43, an on-street parking attendant who worked in front of Jatinegara train station said that he is aware of the government’s decision. He said he would have to accept it even though it would take away his livelihood.
“I have known about it since the construction of this TransJakarta line. But, it’s fine. I can get my income from doing other things,” Sutarman said in Jakarta, Dec 28. “If we get permission to continue working here, then I will stay here. But if not, then what can I say.”
Sutarman, who has been working as a parking attendant since 1990, said that his parking spot is an official parking which retributions are paid to the local government every month. However, since the construction of Corridor XI, no retributions have been made to the local government. “Back then, the parking here is official because we have letter of assignment and we paid income distribution to the local government. But we haven’t submitted any payment since the construction of this TransJakarta line,” he said.
Sutarman, who has 5 subordinates, said that he earns Rp50 thousand per day. Parking for cars is Rp1,500 while motorcycles cost Rp 750. “But usually, car owners give us Rp 2,000 and motorcycle owners give us Rp 1000, so we can keep the change,” Sutarman said.
He doesn’t earn much. “The most I earned is Rp 50 thousand, and I still have to share with my 5 subordinates.”
Head of Traffic Management of Jakarta’s Transportation Bureau, Benhard Hutajulu, said that on-street parking must be removed so as not to disturb the TransJakarta line.
Off-street parking or in-door parking has been prepared since the construction of Corridor XI. “The location of on-street parking disciplining will be along the Jatinegara area,” Benhard said after Corridor XI socialization in Grand Menteng Hotel, Matraman, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
