VIVAnews – Rape still dominates sexual crimes towards Indonesian women. Based on the many reports to the National Commission on Violence against Women, around 50% filed reports were rape cases.
The latest data compiled between 1998 and 2010 shows that 93,960 cases have been reported. Out of the amount, 8,784 cases had been identified.
“As many as 85,176 cases are of rape, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation,” said Deputy Chairman of the National Commission on Violence against Women, Masruchah. Around 50 percent of the number was rape cases.
Other than the three items above, there are other female sexual crimes including sexual abuse, sexual slavery, sexual intimidation or attacks, including rape threats or attempts, forced prostitution, inhuman and sexual punishment. There are 14 types of female sexual crimes.
“These 14 types of sexual crimes are not deemed the final list. There are chances of other unidentified sexual crimes due to restricted information,” Masruchah said.
She said that the complexity of sexual crimes demanded people, especially women, to always stay on alert and to recognize types of sexual crimes. The impact of sexual crimes to the victims must also be put into consideration.
“We need to recognize sexual crimes completely so that we can participate in preventing and managing sexual crimes,” Masruchah said.
