Damaged Roads Accounted for 10% of Accidents

VIVAnews – Directorate of Traffic at Jakarta Police Department claimed that one of the main contributors in high road accident rate in Jakarta was damaged roads. It is estimated that during the rainy season, the number of accidents will double.

Deputy Director of Traffic at Jakarta Police Department, Adj. Chief. Comm. Wahyono, said that other than human factor, the weather has also contributed to the damaged roads. Many potholes that have been patched were again ruined due to the rain. 

“Damaged road contributes to about 10 percent of the cause of accidents. We are still collecting the data, and we have found a number of potholes that may endanger road users such as in:  Jalan Da'an Mogot, S Parman, Gatot Subroto, Kelapa Gading and Jalan Raya Cakung-Cilincing,” said Wahyono on Monday, Jan 16.

Wahyono explained that the Police did not record the number of damaged roads in detail, but they will submit the data they have collected so far to the Public Works Bureau for further action. 

“We hope that in the near future, all roads in the capital will be repaired,” he said.

In 2010, 50 accidents took place due to bumpy roads. In 2011, there were 49 accidents of the same cause (48 in West Jakarta and 1 in Bekasi).  

In 2010, 2 accidents occurred on sharp turns, while 4 accidents happened in 2011 (All in West Jakarta). 

There were 16 damaged road-accidents in 2010 and 1 accident in 2011.  There were 53 potholes-affected accidents in 2010 and 35 accidents in 2011 in West Jakarta, North Jakarta, East Jakarta, Tangerang and Bekasi.
