VIVAnews – A total of 170 Indonesian migrant workers survived the wreck of Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Tuscan island on Friday, Jan 13. Three of Concordia’s crew members were injured during the incident.
“The company who employed them has decided to send the Indonesian workers home,” a spokesman of the Indonesian Embassy in Rome, Musurifun Lajawa told VIVAnews on Monday, Jan 16.
Musurifun said that before they were sent home, the Indonesian Embassy will help these workers to receive their salary. “And if they want to return to work, then the company will give them a priority,” he said.
In order to assist the repatriation of the Indonesia workers, the Embassy is currently processing passport substitutes (SPLP) to replace their missing passports. “We are currently processing their SPLP. They started filling out forms and were taken photographs as of last night,” he said.
Musurifun explained that there are 167 Indonesian workers in 4 hotels in Grosotto, Italy. Meanwhile, 2 of 3 injured crew members, Kadek Agus and Gusti Putu, have been discharged from the hospital and will soon join their coworkers in one of the hotels. Another injured crew, Nyoman Yuniarta, is still hospitalized and will be transferred to a hospital in Sienna. He had a broken spine.
The Costa Concordia cruise ship sank on Friday, Jan 13. The ship carried more than 4,000 passengers.
The cruise ship was supposed to bring thousands of tourists to sail across the Mediterranean waters for 7 days. However, it experienced an electrical faulty near Giglio Island, off Tuscan coast, only 2 hours after departure.
