The Jakarta Police analysis team reacted instantly. The team was established a long time ago and only is deployed whenever any extreme accidents happened, usually with death toll of more than 5 people. Their assignment this time is to reveal the cause of the accident that took place on Sunday afternoon, Jan 22.

“The team does not see the legal aspect, but analyze the cause for investigation purposes,” said Deputy Director of the Jakarta Traffic Police, Adj. Chief. Comm. Wahyono, who presided over the team's meeting on Monday, Jan 23.

Wahyono has yet to disclose the preliminary analysis result. He just stated that the team is still working together with other parties.

The team has no more than 20 days or before the suspect’s jail term ends to complete its analysis. There are four main factors of the analysis: the human or the driver, the vehicle’s condition, the environment or the weather and the road’s infrastructure.

Cornering the Driver

Although the analysis team has not completed its task, the temporary investigation result has cornered the driver as the main cause of the accident. There are several strong potential violations that triggered the traffic accident.

First, the driver was driving in an unstable condition. Other than driving in sleepy condition, she was also under the influence of narcotics and liquor.  The urine test conducted by the police also showed narcotics substances such as meth, ecstasy, and whisky.

Second, the driver was driving the vehicle at a high speed of almost 100 km/hour. The speed exceeded the normal speed limit of 60 km/hour.

Third, the driver does not own a driver’s license, which is legally considered as not having good driving skills.

The preliminary statement that mentioned that the driver had lost her control of the vehicle because of loose brakes was also rejected.

“We have cross-checked the crime scene. There is no brake skids. The car stopped because it hit concrete. She said that the brake was gone, but we checked that it’s not,” said Chief of Jakarta Police spokesperson, Chief. Comm. Rikwanto.

The driver will be charged with multiple charges. In addition to the use of narcotics, the driver will also be charged with driving without car registration (STNK), without driver’s license, damaging public facility and killing other humans.

Murderous Streets

The street is still a first-class killer. The accident above was just a piece of story of thousands of tragedy that haunted urban communities.

Jakarta Police Traffic Data showed that there were 7,778 traffic accidents in Jakarta in 2011.  Out of 9,731 victims, 997 were killed in the accidents, while thousand others experienced minor and major injuries.

The number decreased compared to previous year. The same data from 2010 showed that there were 8,235 traffic accidents, 1,048 victims were killed; 3,473 were seriously injured and 5,825 experienced minor injuries.

Many factors contribute to deadly accidents such as disobedient drivers, unstable drivers, poor car conditions, poor road quality or sharp turns.
