“We are fully relying on imports to fulfill the demands,” said Minister of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries, Sharif Cicip Sutardjo, today, Jan 24.

Cicip said that Indonesia is having a hard time in producing industrial salt because of investment, land and technology issues.

“We have never produced industrial salt from the beginning. So, we have imported industrial salt from a long time ago,” he said.

The industrial salt issue, he said, is being discussed by the Ministry of Industry. So far, the ministry is trying to get investment in East Nusa Tenggara.

“As for me, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries is more about salt for consumption because we are more about giving direct training to salt farmers along the shorelines. The Ministry of Industry is working on the industrial salt, they have the PP 17,” Cicip said.

Cicip said with regard to salt for domestic consumption, this year the ministry is trying for the nation to supply its own salt to stop the imports in the future.
