500 Kids Suffer from Cancer Each Year

VIVAnews - Around 500 children in the Greater Jakarta area, comprising of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek), are indicated to have suffered from cancer. However, the main cause of the disease remains unclear, according to Ira Sulistio, Secretary of Care for Cancer Kids Foundation Indonesia. The data belongs to the International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parents Organization.

"On average, in emerging and developed countries, 125 kids in every one million people suffer from cancer. If it is paralleled with the number of population in Jabodetabek, around 500 kids suffer from cancer every year," said Sulistio on Sunday, Feb. 8.

According to her, cancer among kids cannot be prevented yet and the cause has yet to be discovered. However, she said, cancer is curable as long as the sufferer undergoes early medical treatment. "If one is cancer positive, one should be treated as soon as possible," she said.

According to Sulistio, the government still does not pay enough attention to cancer kids because the number of kids suffering from cancer is only around one percent of adult cancer sufferers.

Celebrating International Cancer Kids Day on 15 February 2009, Care for Cancer Kids Foundation Indonesia merged 50 cancer kids with 150 healthy kids from public and international schools.

"The event is aimed at making cancer kids feel a collective joy with their friends as well as interact with their fellow-cancer kids," she said.
