VIVAnews - Indonesia's income per capita in 2008 increased to US$2,271.2 per capita per year compared to 2007.
"This is quite an increase compared to 2007 with US$1,942.1. The amount is obtained by dividing the total GDP by average currency in 2008," said Head of Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Rusman Heriawan, on Monday, Feb. 16.
He explained that in calculating the GDP per capita, BPS applies export and import realization currencies instead of the one set by Bank Indonesia.
"Therefore, [it is concerned with] currencies during export-import transaction because it uses foreign currency more dominantly," said Heriawan.
BPS previously recorded that the Indonesian GDP in 2008 was at 6.1 percent. In addition, the fourth quarter of 2008 reached 5.2 percent or a 3.6 percent lower than the previous quarter.
"Quarterly year-on-year [GDP] was below six percent. In fact, quarter-to-quarter [GDP] was minus 3.6 percent. This is not surprising because the fourth quarter has always recorded a contraction within the last three years. Therefore, this is not exceptional," said Heriawan.
Heriawan stated that the government agreed that Indonesia had been affected by global financial crisis in the fourth quarter of 2008. However, the situation did not only occur in Indonesia. "Every country whose economy is supported by exports such as Singapore and Japan did not announce positive economic growth," he said.
In the fourth quarter, almost all countries record minus growth. "Indonesia may possible be not [too affected]. The United States was the first affected country. Afterwards, countries having ties with the United States announced negative growth," he said.
