Garuda to Buy Planes Via Mid East Leasing

VIVAnews - A middle east leasing company is prepared to finance purchase of 14 aircrafts that Garuda Indonesia Airlines ordered. The agreement will be signed in March 2009 during the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF).

"There is indeed a commitment from Garuda to buy airplanes," said Coordinating Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Sofyan Djalil on Friday, Feb. 20.

According to Djalil, he is not informed of the specific details of the future aircraft purchase including the allocated budget. However, of the 14 aircrafts, the national aviation company may only take two planes through a leasing company.

"We remind [Garuda]'s management to be cautious in purchasing the planes. In addition, aviation companies across the globe delay their plans for expansion," he said.

Djalil said the principles of prudentiality have actually been carried out by Garuda Indonesia including the decision to postpone the schedule of the planes' arrival.

Earlier, Garuda had stated that it will order 14 new aircrafts of Boeing 737-800 type. Four airplanes are planned to be shipped this year.
