VIVAnews - Tigers (Panthera tigris) are classified into nine subspecies worldwide. However, three out of the total subspecies are extinct. Indonesia is home of two vanished subspecies: Javanese and Balinese tigers.

According to WWF - World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), another lost species is the Kaspian tiger. The South Chinese tiger is categorized as 'functionally extinct' because it has been dislocated from its habitat.

Five other subspecies are on the edge of extinction due to loss of attention over them. WWF further noted that around 3,200 remain in the globe.

Their extinction is triggered by massive illegal tradings of tigers' flesh which has been widely believed by many as medical substance. Tigers are also dealing with heavy expansion of farmland, plantation, and titanic logging. Absence of instant responses over tigers' lives will cause the acceleration of the species' extinction in no later than 2022.

The followings are six living subspecies of tigers:

1. Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae). Estimation has it that the population only remains 400 in Sumatra, Indonesia. This is the smallest subspecies recorded. It is estimated that 40 tigers die in the area every year.

2. Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni). The population is likely to remain 500 in the Malayan peninsula (Thailand - Malaysia borders). The subspecies was differed from the Indochina tiger in 2004.

3. Indochina tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti). Most of the subspecies are living in Thailand. It is predicted that the population remain only 300 in various countries like Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

4. Siberian tiger, or, by other name, Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). It may only remain 450 in Siberia, Russia. In the 1940s, the subspecies having the largest bodies among other tigers was almost extinct because of their small number of 40. However, due to intense efforts of conservation carried out by the Russian government, the population finally increased.

5. Benggala tiger (Panthera tigris tigris or Panthera tigris bengalensis). It is projected that the total population is only 1,850. The popularly known White Tiger is threatened by colossal expansion of humans' dwelling around its habitat.
