VIVA – President Joko Widodo has announced that people are allowed to take off their masks in open spaces. This makes many people feel happy. However, the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Budi Gunadi Sadikin warned that the easing of the policy wouldn’t apply for some vulnerable groups.

Also, masks are still mandatory for vulnerable populations (elderly, have comorbid illnesses, pregnant women, and unvaccinated children), and for those with symptoms such as cough, runny nose, and fever.

“These groups are still required to wear masks to protect themselves from transmission. Then for those who have symptoms of coughing, sneezing, you should still wear a mask," said Minister of Health Budi, in a press statement, quoted on Wednesday, May 18, 2022.

Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that the government could relax other regulations if the conditions for transmission of Covid-19 cases were increasingly under control, fewer and fewer Covid-19 patients were admitted and treated at hospitals, and public awareness to maintain their health was higher.

"Learning from the history of pandemics that have occurred in the world, the transition to endemic is carried out when people are starting to realize how to implement healthy health protocols for themselves and their families.
