VIVA – Jose Ramos-Horta was re-elected and became the 5th President of Timor Leste after the Restoration of Independence of Timor Leste. The East Timorese independence figure and Nobel laureate was officially inaugurated on Friday, May 20, 2022 in local time. The inauguration was held in Tasi-Tolu, Dili, Timor Leste.
On that occasion, Jose Ramos-Horta conveyed his promise and commitment of what he will do while he’s being President in Timor Leste again.
"As president, I’m committed to doing whatever it takes to defend the values ??embodied in the constitution, to protect freedom of thought, freedom to hold beliefs, to express and to have diversity in opinion," Ramos-Horta said in a speech that he delivered at the presidential inauguration.
In his inauguration speech, Ramos-Horta said that he not only represented the people who voted for him, but also that he became president to represent the whole society of Timor Leste.
He said that he commits to protecting, obeying, and upholding the Timor Leste Constitution as the basis of the law with values ??that reflect the nation's identity as agreed by the people of Timor Leste.
The new President Ramos-Horta also conveyed several global issues, such as the world economic situation, geopolitical turmoil, bilateral, multilateral, and regional cooperation, the democratic situation, technological developments in government administration to those related to energy and sustainable development.

He reiterated that becoming a member of ASEAN was the goal of Timor Leste's national strategy during his tenure as a president.
"Today, I defines about the function of a president as the spirit and belief that I’ve carried out in all the responsibilities that have been entrusted to me so far, namely as a servant to the public, a servant to the people of Timor Leste," said Ramos-Horta.
The inauguration was attended by the coordinating minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia Mahfud MD who represented the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo and the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Timor Leste Okto Dorinus.
José Ramos-Horta was officially declared the winner of the 2022 Timor Leste General Election after passing the second round and against the Incumbent Timor Leste President Francisco "Lu Olo" Guterres.
Although Ramos-Horta was an independent presidential candidate, the First President of Timor Leste and the Chair of the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (Congresso Nacional de Reconstrução de Timor/CNRT) Xanana Gusmão give his support to Ramos-Horta.
Furthermore, Ramos-Horta won the general election with 62.09 percent of the vote, while Lu Olo got 37.91 percent of the vote, according to data from the Electoral Administration.
Before elected as a President of Timor Leste for the period 2022-2027, Ramos-Horta had been elected President of Timor Leste in the period 2007-2012. So, this is the second term for Ramos-Horta to serve as president.
