VIVA – Fishermen are expected not to go to sea on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. This is because the natural phenomenon of the Full Strawberry Supermoon will happen. This Strawberry Moon is a special treat because itsn’t an ordinary full moon, but a supermoon, appearing larger and brighter.
This “Strawberry Moon” name has been used Native American Algonquin tribes that live the northeastern United States as well as the Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered.
According to the Research Center for Space Research, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Andi Pangerang, in this new Moon phase, generally it can cause higher sea tides than usual days.
"There is a Sun-Earth-Moon configuration or it could be Sun-Moon-Earth that are in a line position, causing bigger tides. Moreover, this configuration is also strengthened by the moon which is at its closest point to Earth," he said, as quoted from the BRIN website on Monday, June 13, 2022.
Andi Pangerang also reminded us that the highest sea tide will happen on Tuesday tomorrow. So, fishermen are advised not to go to sea two days before and two days after the peak of this phenomenon, which is between June 12 to 16.
"This calculation only considers astronomical factors without looking at sea waves caused by wind storms," ??he explained.
As known, high tides are also known as full moon tides. This is because the Sun-Earth-Moon or Sun-Moon-Earth configurations are in line causing differential forces, or tidal forces, respectively.
The differential force exerted by the Moon and the Sun has the same direction. The direction of the differential is a pair, facing or in the same direction and back or opposite to the object that causes the force.
Indonesian people can watch the Strawberry Supermoon on June 14, 2022 at 6.51 pm on West Indonesia Time (WIB) / 7.51 pm on Central Indonesian Time (WITA) / 8.51 pm on Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT).
