The Aceh Tsunami Museum is a museum in Banda Aceh designed as a symbolic monument to the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami disaster as well as a disaster education center and an emergency shelter in case a tsunami occurs again.

The building has the concept of an Aceh house and an escape hill and the main references are Islamic values, local culture, and tsunami abstractions.

Ridwan Kamil designed this building when he won an international competition held in 2007 to commemorate the 2004 tsunami disaster. This building commemorates the victims, whose names are written on the wall of one of the deepest rooms of the museum, and the community members who survived this disaster.

Besides its role as a memorial to the dead, the museum is also useful as a place of refuge from such disasters in the future, including a "refuge hill" for visitors if another tsunami occurs.

The walls of the museum are decorated with pictures of people dancing the Saman, a symbolic meaning to the strength, discipline, and religious beliefs of the Acehnese. From above, the roof formed the waves of the sea. The ground floor is designed to resemble a traditional Aceh stilt house that survived the tsunami.

The rooftop of the Aceh Tsunami Museum building is also designed as an escape roof, namely an evacuation area in the event of a flood or tsunami disaster in the future.

The Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, expressed his emotional experience when designing the Aceh Tsunami Museum building in Banda Aceh City, which was designed as a symbol of reminder of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Tanah Rencong in 2004, an education center, and shelter during disaster emergencies.

"At that time, I was not yet as a mayor, I was an architect, have designed many buildings, but the most emotional  and tearful design was when I designed the Aceh Tsunami Museum," he said while attending the 17th anniversary of the Aceh tsunami in Ulee Lheu, Banda Aceh in December 2021.

Ridwan Kamil hopes that the museum can continue to accompany the journey of the Acehnese people.

"The Aceh Tsunami Museum is 14 years old and hopefully it will continue to accompany the glorious journey of the Acehnese people," he said.

Atalia Praratya's husband presented an open concept for this building, far from being haunted. He wants anyone who goes to the Aceh Tsunami Museum, will always be missed.

"The museum is very open; I present a place that is not haunted. So, people, every day, if they miss, need rest, please come without having to go into it," he added.
