Arsenic has historically been known as the 'king of poisons' and 'the poison of kings' because of its toxic power and popularity among rulers who are secretly trying to get rid of their rivals, according to a 2011 study published in the journal Toxicological.

According to the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (US DCC) for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, arsenic is a naturally occurring element that is widely distributed in the Earth's crust.

Pure arsenic is usually found in the environment in combination with other elements such as oxygen, chlorine, sulfur, carbon and hydrogen. Arsenic produces a white or colorless powder, without having a specific odor or taste. Meanwhile, these substances are usually invisible, either in food or drink, according to the Live Science website on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.

Currently, arsenic poisoning is more likely to be accidental than intentional. Most people are commonly exposed to arsenic through drinking water in areas where levels of arsenic in the mineral are naturally dissolved.

Other sources of accidental arsenic exposure include contact with contaminated soil or dust, wood preserved using arsenic compounds, or food, such as rice and some fruit juices.

This substance can harm every organ in the human body. Large doses can cause symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, shock, abnormal heart rhythms and multi-organ failure that can eventually lead to death.

The long-term effects of high arsenic levels in drinking water can be related to medical conditions such as skin disorders, an increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and some types of cancer, including lung and skin cancer.
