The Svadara Dance Group from Indonesia Wins Competition in Korea

VIVA – South Korea is holding a championship competition in Daegu on July 8 to 11, 2022 entitled Powerful Daegu Festival. Indonesia gave representatives to take part in this competition, one of which was the Traditional Music and Dance Studio, Svadara Indonesia and managed to become the third winner.

Previously, the festival was titled as Colorful Daegu Festival, this competition for performing arts from Korea and various countries that are packaged in street performances and parades which are divided into two categories, Local (Korean) and International.

The Svadara group representing Indonesia sent 14 dancers and 4 officials to the Powerful Daegu Festival, showing the beauty of Indonesia through dances from various regions, namely Bali, West Sumatra, DKI Jakarta, and Papua.

The dances are performed sequentially to tell a process of achieving happiness and describe how Indonesian people express gratitude.

The dance also as an expression of happiness and gratitude welcomes conditions that are starting to return to normal, after more than two years of the pandemic.

The leader of the Svadara Group, Alfrida Chrisna Sitorus said that he was very grateful to be able to take part in an international competition and win as the third winner.

“We are very proud and grateful to be able to appear in an international dance competition and win an award as the third winner to compete with other countries. This award further spurs us to continue working to preserve and introduce Indonesian dance to the world.” Alfrida Christina Sitorus said.

"The departure of the Svadara Indonesia team certainly would not have happened without the support of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government through the DKI Jakarta Provincial Culture Service and the South Jakarta City Administration Culture Sub-department and sponsors who provided support so that we could participate in the Powerful Daegu Festival," Alfrida added.

In 2015 Svadara Indonesia also represented Indonesia in the Sabah International Folklore Festival and won the Highest Online Presence category.

Beside active participate in international competitions, Svadara Indonesia has several times appeared as invitations to cultural events, including at the International Festival in Pahang, Malaysia (2017), Cultural Night in Penang, Malaysia (2018), and Cultural Night in Khartoum, Sudan (2017 and 2019).

Svadara Indonesia is also active in participating to join various competitions in the DKI Jakarta area and nationally. To strengthen its existence, Svadara Indonesia actively holds dance performances.

PUSUH, one of Svadara's works which will be staged online in 2021 is an evidence of Svadara Indonesia's commitment to keep working even though it is hampered by the pandemic conditions.

This dance studio located in South Jakarta, has a practice schedule every Saturday with practice hours according to class category. Currently, Svadara Indonesia has 120 active members which are divided into 5 class categories, namely pre-basic, basic, level 1, level 2, and adult beginner class.
