The supermoon phenomenon in August often referred to as the Sturgeon Moon. Many consider this a supermoon which means the Full Moon occurs when Earth's natural satellite is at its closest point to Earth or known as perigee.

As quoted from the Live Science website on Thursday, August 11, 2022, the sturgeon Moon will appear in 90 percent of perigee, making it a supermoon by most scientific definitions.

Sturgeon Moon will be the fourth supermoon in a row after Buck Moon in July, Strawberry Moon in June and Flower Moon in May. August's full moon will be the last supermoon of the year.

Sturgeon Moon came from the Algonquin tribe of what is now eastern North America. The phenomenon coincides with large sturgeons that are easier to catch in the Great Lakes this season.

Supermoons usually occur when the Moon and the Sun are facing each other and the Sun's rays shine directly on the Moon. A full moon occurs about once a month when the Sun, Earth and Moon align on an invisible 180-degree line.

The Moon's orbit is about five degrees different from Earth's, so it's usually slightly higher or lower than Earth's shadow, allowing sunlight to illuminate the side facing Earth.

The peak of the next full moon will occur on Saturday, September 10, 2022. The next phenomenon will usually be referred to as the Harvest Moon. It also marked the harvest for the Native Americans.
