In the discussion on Culture for a Sustainable Earth held by the Merdeka Barat 9 Forum in Jakarta, on Thursday, August 11, 2022, Maudy Ayunda also invited young people to know more about local wisdom that actually can be adopted to overcome the climate crisis.

“Now, the young generations are aware of the climate crisis. But how to relate it to the cultural aspect. That's why I invite young people to use their curiosity to know more about local wisdom that can be relied on to overcome climate change,” Maudy Ayunda explained.

According to Maudy Ayunda, one of the most appropriate ways to overcome the climate crisis is through culture. Many past cultures can be studied and are now alive.

"If people imagine that Indonesia is an archipelago of many cultures, imagine the richness of these cultures," Maudy Ayunda remarked.

The culture in question is a perspective that is passed down from generation to generation, returning to the original, local wisdom. There is also the concept of the recycling economy, which is to take enough and return the rest to the earth.

Maudy Ayunda said the current obstacle is how to connect local culture or wisdom with young people, because millennials and Gen Z are already aware of the threat of climate change, only how to connect it with local wisdom.

“Perhaps with institutional efforts such as the existence of a youth studio (sanggar), young people can enter the local wisdom. Because, if people enter with a straightforward culture, they won't be able to catch it, therefore it is important to explore it,” Maudy Ayunda explained.
