Indonesia's efforts to end the status quo of air space over the Riau and Natuna Islands have been carried out since 1995 and more intense in 2015 under the leadership of President Joko Widodo.

In addition to increasing the scope of the Flight Information Region, other benefits of adjusting the FIR agreement include international recognition that FIRs above Riau Islands and Natuna will become Jakarta FIR areas.

Indonesia also has the independence to regulate commercial and state air traffic activities, and it can place members of the Civil Aviation Navigation Service Authority/ATC, and the military at the Singapore ATC.

With the adjustment of this agreement, the movement of aircraft passing over the Riau Islands and Natuna will be charged. So, it can generate income for Indonesia.

It can increase Indonesia's Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) which can use for investment in the development of human resources and Indonesian aviation navigation equipment.
