Jokowi Says Climate Change as Current Challenge of Food Security

VIVA – President Joko Widodo highlighted and said that climate change becomes the current challenge in realizing national food security, even though Indonesia has positive capital in the form of recognition from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in mid-August.

"I have said many times that by the International Rice Research Institute we have been declared self-sufficient since 2019, and we have also been declared to have good food security," President Jokowi explained to media reporters.

The President explained that the award was a good asset in Indonesia's efforts to improve national food security during the challenges of climate change.

Specifically, President Jokowi mentioned that there are separate concerns regarding the climate in the country, which has tended to be wet for the past two years.

"We have been getting wet for more than two years, which I am afraid if we get dry at the same time," President Jokowi remarked.

Joko Widodo ensured that he asked his staff to always prepare various things to maintain national food security.

"Everything I have said must be ready because we have meetings on food and energy affairs every week. Usually every six months, this is already every week," President Jokowi added.

For example, on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, the President chaired an internal meeting at the Jakarta Presidential Palace regarding the development of food estates as part of efforts to improve national food security.

In addition to evaluating the development of food estates in various regions, the internal meeting also decided on the plan to establish a Strategic Logistics Reserve Agency.

According to the coordinating minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto after the meeting, the regulation for the establishment of the Strategic Logistics Reserve Agency will be included in a Presidential Regulation (Perpres) related to National Food Improvement through the Development of Food Estate Areas.

It is known that the Minister of Defense, Prabowo Subianto will lead the Strategic Logistics Reserve Agency.
