VIVA – A man from Iran who hasn’t showered in nearly seven decades or is called the dirtiest man in the world, Amou Haji died at 94 years on Sunday, October 23, 2022. Irna news agency reported that Amou Haji died in the village of Dejgah in the Southern Province of Fars.
Haji was single and avoided taking a shower in the fear of "getting sick”. However, a few months ago, he was forced by the villagers to clean his body for the first time.
A short documentary titled "The Strange Life of Amou Haji" was made about his life in 2013. The reclusive Haji living in a small coal hut were reported by local media to have not bathed in water or soap for more than seven decades.
Haji used to live in an open brick hut and he had faced some "emotional setbacks in his youth" that made him stern about not taking a bath with water or soap.
In 2014, the Tehran Times reported that Haji would eat roadkill, smoke a pipe filled with animal excrement, and believe that cleanliness would make him ill.
In 2009 the Hindustan Times reported that Kailash “Kalau” Singh, from a village outside the holy city of Varanasi, had not washed for more than 30 years in an attempt to help end “all the problems confronting the nation”.
He would reject water in favor of what he called a “fire bath”. “Every evening as villagers gather, Kalau … lights a bonfire, smokes marijuana and stands on a leg praying to Lord Shiva,” the Hindustan Times reported.
Singh was reported to have said: “It’s just like using water to take a bath. Fire bath helps kill all the germs and infections in the body.”
Amou Haji set a record for being the longest person without a bath and the dirtiest man in the world in 2014.
Not only hated bathing, but he was also very disgusted with fresh healthy foods and clean drinks. Different from people in general, Haji actually likes strange food, namely rotten meat from dead animals, especially porcupines. The smoking pipe is also filled with animal waste instead of tobacco.
Many local people actually think that he is afraid of water. So, he chooses not to shower for years. However, in fact, there was one resident who revealed that Haji only believed that cleanliness brought disease and he lived his life staying dirty to make his body healthy even until he died and took a bath for the first time.

While undergoing a series of health checks, Haji was finally declared healthy and did not suffer from any disease. At first, a team of doctors led by parasitology professor Dr. Gholamreza Molavi from the School of Public Health in Tehran convinced Amou Haji to carry out a series of health checks.
The doctors also test for hepatitis, AIDS, and parasites. Uniquely, bacteria or parasites that cause various diseases except Trichinosis do not show any symptoms even though they are found in Amou Haji’s body.
