Indonesia Focuses on Five-Point Agreement to Help Myanmar

VIVA – The Indonesian President, Joko Widodo, said that he will focus on encouraging the implementation of the Five Point Consensus of ASEAN leaders in helping to resolve the Myanmar issue. On a separate occasion, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi said that the Myanmar issue will be one of the topics discussed at the first meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers in Jakarta in early February. The Five Points of Consensus will be ASEAN's main platform and mechanism in assisting Myanmar.

"So, we want the implementation of the Five-Points of Consensus to be the main platform, the main mechanism of ASEAN's contributes to helping Myanmar out of its political crisis. But again, the one who can help Myanmar is the Myanmar people themselves. ASEAN is helping them and wants to help them. This is a sovereign country," Retno Marsudi explained.

Furthermore, Minister Retno stated that Indonesia has always conveyed the message to the Myanmar military junta that the implementation of the Five Points of Consensus is the only ASEAN approach to help Myanmar.

Unfortunately, until now there has been no significant progress, "We will continue to try to invite all parties in Myanmar to implement the Five Points of Consensus," Minister Retno added.

Minister Retno also explained that the priority of Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023 is to accelerate the development of the ASEAN community for the benefit of the ASEAN people to move forward. For this reason, Indonesia does not want the Myanmar issue to hold hostage all these processes that are underway in ASEAN.

"Of course, we must help Myanmar get out of its political crisis, but we don't want the Myanmar issue to hold hostage all the processes that are running in ASEAN. We want to make sure this process continues," she said.
