Meet ASEAN Foreign Ministers, Jokowi Emphasizes Two Important Things

VIVA – Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) warmly welcomed the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Friday. The President was accompanied by Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Retno Marsudi.
In this meeting, Minister Retno said the ASEAN Foreign Ministers (AMM) will be held to discuss the issue of Myanmar.
"I report to the President that today and tomorrow the ASEAN foreign ministers will hold a series of meetings, which will discuss the issue of Myanmar," Retno said at the Merdeka Palace, on February 3, 2023.

This series of meetings of ASEAN Foreign Ministers is the first major meeting held under the chairmanship of Indonesia. During the meeting between the Indonesian President and the ASEAN Foreign Ministers, Retno explained that Jokowi emphasized two important things.
"The first is that ASEAN should not become anyone's proxy. The President emphasized the importance of ASEAN centralization and unity that needs to be maintained because this is the main capital of ASEAN." Minister Retno stated.
"And the President emphasized the importance of respecting the democratic principles of international law, human rights, following what is in the ASEAN Charter," Minister Retno added.
In addition, the President also emphasized that the Five-Point Consensus will remain the main mechanism of ASEAN in addressing issues or developments in Myanmar. Furthermore, ASEAN must also become the epicenter of growth amidst the darkness of the current world economic projections.
"Second, the President emphasized that we will be able to make ASEAN an epicenter of growth if we can maintain peace and stability in the region," she said.
Minister Retno also said that in this meeting, ASEAN Foreign Ministers highly appreciated several directives delivered by President Jokowi. They also emphasized their support for Indonesia's chairmanship.
As information, during Indonesia's chairmanship of ASEAN 2023, on February 2-3, 2023, a meeting will be held by ASEAN Foreign Ministers called The ASEAN Foreign Ministers (AMM).
