Government Prepares Policy Options for Electric Vehicle Incentives

VIVA – The government plans to implement electric vehicle incentives by March 2023. In this case, the Ministry of Industry stated that it has prepared three alternative policies related to incentives, which will be decided soon by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that President Jokowi has given direction to his party to immediately implement incentives for electric cars.
"But the formulation is not yet. We at the Ministry of Industry already have three alternative policies and alternative programs that will soon be decided. So, we cannot rush to say that it will be through government-borne VAT or PPnBM (Luxury Goods Sales Tax)," Minister Kartasasmita said at Toyota Plant 3, Karawang, West Java on Tuesday.

The incentives for electric vehicles that will be provided by the government are planned to be an IDR 7 million subsidy for motorcycles and tax cuts for electric cars. However, the minister said the car incentives were still uncertain.
"Not necessarily, there are still other options that have not been decided by the Government. But certainly, incentives will be decided because we want to support the acceleration of the formation of the electric vehicle ecosystem," he explained.
Previously, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif revealed that the Government will provide incentives for electric vehicles in March 2023 for the conversion of conventional motorcycles, new motorcycles, and four-wheeled vehicles.
"Regarding the implementation of electric vehicles, the plan is for March. There are also conversion motorcycles and new motorcycles, as well as four-wheeled vehicles," Minister Tasrif said.
The minister said that the incentives given to four-wheeled vehicles are not in the form of money. In this case, it was previously known that four-wheeled vehicle incentives would be given by the Government in the form of tax cuts.
"It is not money for four-wheeled vehicles. But if the motorcycle is an incentive to help people to be able to own electric motorbikes, both conversions and new ones at a lower cost," he remarked.
Arifin continued, for electric vehicle incentives on motorbikes, IDR7 million will be given.
