VIVA – The social media platform, Twitter Inc will remove and archive account that have been inactive for years, according to CEO Twitter, Elon Musk on his tweet, Monday.

Musk added that users on the micro-blogging platform could see a drop in followers. According to Twitter's policy, users must log into their accounts at least once every 30 days to avoid permanent deletion for prolonged inactivity.

Earlier this month, Musk "threatened" to switch National Public Radio's Twitter account to another company, after the public broadcaster stopped posting content to its 52 official Twitter feeds in protest against Twitter's labeling implying government involvement in its editorial content.

Many users replied to tweet Musk, asking if there would be a way to memorialize the accounts of deceased users. The billionaire hinted that deleted accounts would then "be archived".

Google Plans to Charge for AI-powered Search Engine

The latest decision comes as Twitter continues to make new changes to the platform to increase revenue, although some actions have alienated users and advertisers.

Earlier last month, Twitter also eliminated free blue ticks, including prominent celebrities, journalists and politicians, and monetized its user verification process, charging people US$8 each month for a "blue tick" badge.

Musk, however, proceeded to restore blue ticks on some celebrity, media and other high-profile accounts even as some recipients protested receiving free verification.

Twitter has also tried several different approaches to increase revenue, including relaxing some of its policies banning political ads and adding more expensive ad-free subscription options to its platform.

Musk has made account verification part of Twitter's Blue subscription, a move he says will handle the problem of bot accounts on the social media platform.

The social media company also announced that it plans to charge companies from US$42,000 to US$210,000 per month for access to its Application Programming Interface.

Twitter has also changed its content policy, announce that it will rely more on artificial intelligence (AI) to moderate posts on the platform.
