ASEAN Para Games: Table Tennis Earns 31 Golds for Late David Jacobs
VIVA – The Indonesian table tennis team has successfully won 31 gold medals, as well as the overall champion title in the sport. This victory is dedicated to the late David Jacobs, a para table tennis athlete who passed away in April 2023.
"We were motivated and determined to achieve the best possible results in Cambodia. We dedicate these gold medals to him," said Bayu Widhie Hapsara Purba, the table tennis coach, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Friday.
David Jacobs passed away on April 28, a month before the Indonesian contingent departed for Cambodia to compete in the ASEAN Para Games 2023.
Out of the 31 gold medals earned by the Indonesian para table tennis team, 12 were obtained on the final day of the competition on Thursday at the Table Tennis Hall Morodok Techo in Phnom Penh.
The 12 gold medals were contributed by Yayang Gunaya (TT4 men), Ana Widyasarai (TT11 women), Hana Resti (TT9 women), Tatok Hardiyanto (TT5 men), and Leli Marlina (TT5 women).
Additionally, Kusnanto (TT9 men), Komet Akbar (TT10 men), Suwarti (TT8 women), Moh Rian Prahasta (TT8 men), Muhammad Alfigo Dwiputra (TT11 men), Siti Fadillah (TT7 women), and Sella Dwi Radayana (TT10 women) also secured gold medals.
Purba explained that one of the key factors contributing to the impressive performance of the para table tennis team, resulting in 31 gold medals, was the extensive preparation following last year's ASEAN Para Games.
"We had a break of less than two months and then resumed continuous training. This program has helped the athletes mature and achieve these accomplishments," he said.
