The government has struggled for weeks to contain the unrest, after a police officer shot dead Nahel M, during a traffic check in a Paris suburb on June 27, 2023.

The killing revived old accusations of racism in France, after Nahel was identified as a Muslim, "So far, there have been 11,300 insurance claims related to the riots," said Florence Lustman, head of the French Assureurs federation.

The unrest marks the most intense urban violence in France in nearly two decades, with many cars burned, buildings damaged, and public spaces vandalized across the country.

In addition, last week a United Nations (UN) committee called on France to ensure the investigation into Nahel's murder is thorough and impartial.

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination also raised concerns over excessive use of force by law enforcement.
