Jokowi, Kamala Harris Discuss Indonesia and US Strategic Partnership

Jakarta – The Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday held a bilateral meeting with the United States (US) Vice President Kamala Harris on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit.

The Head of State said that the United States is a comprehensive strategic partner for ASEAN. 

"As a comprehensive strategic partner, the position of the United States is increasingly significant for the success of the ASEAN Summit, including ensuring the relevance of the East Asia Summit," President Jokowi said at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Senayan, on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Kamala Harris expressed her appreciation for Indonesia's leadership in ASEAN 2023. She assessed that Indonesia's leadership has made ASEAN a priority to deliver real results with a special emphasis on economic growth.

"Indonesia is an important partner and friend to the United States. We have a long-standing friendship and relationship that helps promote prosperity and security for our countries and a free and open Indo-Pacific," Kamala Harris expressed. 

On a separate occasion, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi explained that President Jokowi and the US Vice President discussed the preparation of a concrete action plan in realizing a comprehensive strategic partnership.

"In the bilateral meeting between Mr. President and Vice President Harris, the plan to establish an Indonesia-US comprehensive strategic partnership proposed by the United States and also the preparation of a joint action plan was discussed," the Minister remarked. 

During the meeting, the President also encouraged the expansion of market access through the generalized system of preferences (GSP) scheme and the realization of previously agreed supply chain cooperation.

"Also the establishment of a critical minerals agreement, CMA for cooperation related to critical minerals and the realization of an equitable energy transition partnership," the Minister said.
