The Singapore Icon to Undergo Repair Works Until December

Singapore – The Merlion Statue is already popular as Singapore's iconic statue and a must-visit place for tourists. But, the Singapore Tourism Board has announced that the main Merlion statue at Merlion Park will be undergoing repair work from September 25 to December 13, 2023.

"We seek the public's understanding as the works and barricades may cause some inconvenience during this period. The statue was recently closed for maintenance works from July 27 to 28," it said on Friday. 

During the repair process, tourists cannot take photos of the lion-headed and fish-bodied statue, "However, the public can take photos around the lion cub statue at Merlion Park,"

The Singapore Tourism Board's director of compliance and corporate services, Hazel Teh, explained that the repair work will include repairing cracks in the statue. The statue will also be cleaned.

"These repairs are necessary to ensure the long-term preservation of this iconic Singapore landmark," Hazel Teh informed. 

Hazel Teh also said that the work duration of about 2.5 months is necessary due to the extensive repair process.

"In fact, the Merlion was last restored in 2019, which also required a 2.5-month shutdown," Teh continued.

The Merlion statue was created by local artist Lim Nang Seng. It was unveiled on September 15, 1972, by Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew at t the Singapore River. So, it means this statue will turn 51 in 2023.
